Biography
Dr. Simone Smarr is a Sr. Research Scientist in the Institute for Human-Centered AI at Howard University, specializing in human-centered computing, educational technology, and culturally responsive computing. She focuses on broadening access to education and designing inclusive, uplifting, and engaging learning experiences. Dr. Smarr also leads the Computing CHANGE (Cultivating Human-centered Approaches for New Growth in Education) Lab.
Dr. Smarr investigates how computing education and technology design can be more responsive to the lived experiences of various communities. She bridges computing education, user experience, and artificial intelligence, exploring how human-centered AI and UX principles inform the design of culturally sustaining learning environments. She also investigates the impact of these environments on learners and their engagement with technology.
Dr. Smarr received her PhD in Human-Centered Computing from the University of Florida and her Bachelor of Science from Spelman College.
